#26 Adventure and Excitement! (Also Death.)

#26 Adventure and Excitement! (Also Death.)

Original Text: (From Marcus)

If you can’t win, make sure you lose with style.

Shamus Says:

I really like Marcus’ attitude. I know the comic is ostensibly “this is how to play D&D wrong”, but I think little bits of wisdom sneak in there from time to time.

Shawn Says:

This is more or less how I play, on the rare times when I’m a player and not a GM.  After a couple of minutes of people deciding what to do with the mysterious door, I tend to just kick it in.  This is probably one of the reasons I end up playing meat shield types a lot.  Also, I’d last about 2 minutes in the Tomb of Horrors.  ;)

  1. SatansBestBuddy says:

    5th edition?

So, like, they’re in the future?

Then why are they not using holodecks and instead do everything the old fashioned ie terrible way?!?

  2. Shawn says:

D&D&D has had 5 editions since it’s release 6 years ago. Word is they’re working on the 6th.

  3. artcurmudgeon says:

why oh why must the most beloved of rpgs become like a bad microsoft product?!?

  4. Rob says:

@artcurmudgeon, it’s like we say in the IT world, “it isn’t the software it is the users.” In this case, it isn’t the game, it’s the players. This, ironically enough, has always been my experience as well. I’m forever seeking out good GMs and players because far too many of them have been like our cast here. CB truly is a picture of reality, at least for some…

  5. Wil K. says:

Oh Shawn, you wouldn’t even make it inside the Tomb; there are a few ways to die before managing to get inside.

  6. Ictoagn says:

Wil K is right. I once had a TPK of a 6-man party before we even got in. And a similar experience in the first room. I’ve never gotten very far.

  7. Thirith says:

Just an observation: that first frame looks a lot like one frame from Sandman: The Kindly Ones, both in terms of style and composition. (The frame I’m referring to shows Thessaly reading a book.)

  8. Shawn says:

Ha! Indeed. Wasn’t intentional, but Mark Hempel’s art in that arc really struck a nerve with me.

  9. rangerjohn says:

I once had a TPK outside the bandit lair, outside Homlett. Nothing like save or die hard coded into the first encounter.
