0096: Thorton’s Tale, pt 1

Flashback time!  You get one guess which brother is Thorton.

New vote incentive, a jumbo version of panel 5.  Voting makes you cool, all the cool kids do it.

I’ve received more guest art for next week, it’s going to be super awesome.

See you Friday for pt. 2!

I was kind of expecting a “well… not that long…” joke, but oh well.

(“OK, here we go: the short, short version.”)

    • Shawn says:

I’m really shocked that no one has made a “That’s What She Said” joke in reference to panel 3.

  2. Audacitor says:

Judging based on skin color: The one on the right is Thorton.

  3. Cuthalion says:

Yay flashback! And a studly young Aladdinesque Thorton.

  4. Flo says:

I’m guessing the one on the right too. Also, I see thorton got his bow from his dad.

I love the last two panels especially, with the sun and the city followed by the family portrait. I just love your art in general.

  5. Avilan says:

Best picture of Eve yet I think!

    • Shawn says:

Don’t tell anyone, but it’s actually just the drawing of her from a couple of pages ago, with the eyes moved and a new mouth drawn on.

  6. mordicai says:

That family picture in the last panel is really great. Ionian Gothic.

    • Shawn says:

That’s exactly what I was going for. :D

I think the writing on today’s page is a bit bland, but the art carries it along. The art in that last panel says more about Thorton than his narration does, which is kind of interesting to me because we can assume it’s detail that we know but the other characters don’t necessarily.

  7. Nicole says:

Could kid Thorton get any cuter?? Such a great family portrait. :)

  8. Jericho says:

+1 on the awesome comments/compliments for the art in panels 4 and 5.

And, just because you already commented on this, thus provoking me:
    “Long, please.”
“Yes, that is indeed what she said.”

  9. Didub says:

How did this play out in-game? Did the other players really know stuff about Lukov that Oph’s player didn’t, was it just good roleplaying, or did you just add this into the comics?

This is the first time I actually studied the art on the comic first, before reading it. The way the yellow lines going around the sun contrast with the horizontal clouds is my favorite part. Great job, Shawn!

    • Shawn says:

This was mostly just for the comic’s benefit. Since Eva and Thorton’s histories tie in to Lukov, I realized this was about the last place it would make sense to add them.

There was a bit of that in the game though, since Ophelia’s player missed character creation and so wasn’t there when the other players created their histories (and made up Lukov)

Ah, northern Irone. Makes me want to sing:

    “Home, home on the range
where vampires and werewolves are slain
    where often is heard,
    a bloodcurdling word,
and the skies are filled with blood rain.”

    • Shawn says:

Vampires aren’t real, just ask Thorton. And it’s too dry and warm for wolves, much less werewolves.

Now, “Where flesh eating beetles and bloodworms are slain” could work.

      • syhd says:

I was trying to work in sandworms and flesh beetles, but it didn’t work well. Anyway, the reason there aren’t any werewolves and vampires is because of people like Thorton’s dad.

  11. Ken says:

funny story about Ironian beetles. Maybe you’ll find out in a few years ;)
