Hey! It’s a bonus comic! Eva’s Tale includes our latest Clockworks Reader Cameos. Congratulate Andrew and Yvonne, who are now immortalized as Eva’s parents.

I’m keeping Teen Thorton as the vote incentive, since it only went live yesterday. But here’s a large version of angry teenage Eva for your entertainment. Click for full size.
Teenage Eva puts the “punk” in “steampunk”! (Shut up, I had to say it.)

There are two (maybe more?) easter eggs in today’s strip. First person to correctly spot either gets a cookie!*

The Anniversary Week rampage continues. In addition to a bonus comic today, here is a pinup of Eva, looking much more mature than she does in today’s comic.
Today’s art comes courtasy of Larry/Syhd/Phodyr, who you have likely seen on the comments or chatting on the livestream. He’s also the man behind the steampunk rappers and the artist of the Sir Wilhom Bloodbourne guest strips that will run one day. Larry does not have a webcomic of his own, but he does have a deviantart page. Check it out.

I think that’s it for today. Tune in tomorrow for a big rambly anniversary week blog from me, and come back Friday for Oliver’s Story!
*actual cookie not included.

I love angry, rebellious Eva. Very cool.
And the guest art of Eva is rockaliciouis.
I love Eva’s explanation. Short. And only slightly longer. But very poignant.
Her parents portrait rocks!
(Crossing my fingers that Erik comes back into the comic. Though there’s not room for him in Eva’s life now…)
Yeah, Eva’s Tale is right to the point. Partly because I didn’t want to spend a month of real time with our heroes sitting around telling their histories before they went after Lukov, and partly because it really fit her character.
So when we get to Oliver’s tale it’ll be several blocks of “That’s Classified” and a scene change back to him? (/wink)
See today’s comic.
Dummy me. I didn’t realize before she has Erik’s coat. I should have noticed that before!
I cannot decide whether Teen!Eva or Adult!Eva is more hotness.
Therefore, I will instead vote and smile back at smiling teen Thorton
Wow, Eva’s tale is really good. Her parents look like the sort you would run away from and come home running to because no matter what stupid things you’ve done, they welcome their prodigal punker home no matter what. Or would, if they hadn’t been taken. : sniff ::
I love panel 5. Really really good stuff.
I kinda wonder why, though, she thinks Lukov took them, and not the National Police?
The thing that amuses me most about Teenage Eva, is that she’s Super Angry Punk Rock Rebellious Chick ™ who comes from an upper class, supportive family. Of all the characters we’ve seen so far, she really had the least reason to rage against the machine. But then, like that’s ever mattered for angry rebellious teens before.
It’s a steampunk world, Shawn. If we are to rage against the world in general, we HAVE to rage against the machine.
And AWWWWWW! Eva wears the jacket of her lost Faeblooded love! That’s so rockabilly.
WAITAMINUTE. Is Erik the same blondie Faeblooded boy as Ophelia’s story, part 3? I smell character history crossover!
*Ding ding ding*
Larry, that has to be right. Nice find.
In regards to Erik and “the jacket”. Yes, we of the fans did inquire about how much this faeblooded’s jacket looks like Eva’s back in the day. Shawn gave us a wink and a “we shall see” in his typical secretive fashion. Our belief is that Erik indeed is the faeblooded elf in the 5th level Rookery Orphanage with Ophelia.
JBeatnik: Good call. I hadn’t really paid attention to Eva’s jacket until I drew the fan art for today, so now it’s suddenly there in my face.
Very awesome art today! I really like the gritty feel!
Thanks, I went with a sketchier art style, then tried out a different way of coloring things. Now I really like the painterly style of coloring our heroes as opposed to the usual flat style. I’ll have to figure out what to do in future strips.
Heh, and that’s pretty much exactly how my hair looks when I get up in the morning!
Very awesome.
I’m now going to reply to myself to admit to also being known in the real world as Yvonne, hence the comment about the Eve’ s mom’s hair.
Stubby: you have an awesome beehive-gone-wild hairdo.
Luckily for all concerned I keep it tied back to curtail its plans for world domination.
Who doesn’t love a flashback? Especially one about the history of a character.
Erik…you are dangerously close to becoming a main character…watch out!
Also, Eva is the daughter of two mages. [thinking] Odds would favor that affinity being passed down to Eva. [thinking] But still a 25% chance (I think) of Eva not having any affinity at all. Does she secretly have mage abilities? Or does she not know that she does? Or does she just straight not have any magic? I think that will eventually make itself clear, too.
Love Eva’s parents! Her mom’s hair is to die for!
I also want to know how Eva gained a penchant for cigars.
Just omnibussed through the entire archives to get a better understanding of where everything sits for our heroes right now. It would lead one to some interesting theories…
I’m jealous of her goggles. I saw some for sale, but they were 100 dollars. :[ One day I will be as cool as Eva. One day.
Two other things come to mind:
1) If Erik is the same faeblooded blonde boy from Ophelia’s past, then he must have been one of the first to be abducted, since years have gone by since his disappearance and Eva’s search for her parents.
2) The abductions that Ophelia mentioned earlier must have been part of the long string of uninvestigated crimes that Thorton’s dad didn’t look into since they happened in the Rookery.
3) Another reason why Thorton’s dad Elias doesn’t consider faeblooded real people is probably tied to having been a hunter of Unnatural Things That Cause Humans Trouble in northern Irone.
4) There must be some interesting tensions between Thorton and Eva about what to do when they get their hands on Lukov. Thorton’s first instinct is to kill him on sight; Eva must want him alive long enough to find out what happened to her parents.
and when I said, two, I meant four.
Naturally.
All valid points, yes.
The Rookery (as well as Little San Khotal and the Ironian Neighborhood that I can’t think up a good name for) would have their own Private Constables, assuming someone in each neighborhood had enough money to file the papers and hire them. Hmm… I like the idea that the government denied the Rookery’s permit, leaving their security/investigators without any kind of authority.
So really, people abducting Faeborn from the Rookery would be outside of Elias’s jurisdiction, were it not for the fact that at the time Lukov’s gang’s hideout was in the Bronze Gardens. Which, you know, put things squarely back in Elias’s jurisdiction. He just didn’t do anything about it until Lukov & co started snatching mages/other people from outside the Rookery.
3: Absolutely. Because of his old job in Irone, Elias would see someone like Toby and think “Okay, what the hell is this thing and does it have any weak points?” as opposed to “Who’s this kid and is he a threat or is he okay.”
Hmmm, I’m liking this Erik character…
Or maybe I just have a weakness for guys with scruffy blond hair and mysterious back stories. Call me biased.
Great strip, love the antique’y painting feel of it.
One quibble: last panel should read “It’s led me to the…” not “lead”
On it.
I’m going to pretend that Eva’s mom and dad were drawn to look like me & Jason.
Don’t ruin my illusion.
Okay.
Nice job on not only keeping the comic up a year, but having it be so entertaining. I’m looking forward to another year.
love this page! and I just noticed Eva slowly raising her shirts up as she grows up. I just love those little details you put in your comic. and I totally love how teenaged Eva looks. so wanna-be punk.
also, Eva’s hair is purple when she’s a teen. is that a style choice, or did eva dyed her hair when she was a teen?
Ether powered hair dye.
