Ouch.
To be fair, Thorton has made his intentions clear for some time.

In news: I’m going to try something. I’ve brought back to life my Amazon Wish List, only it’s now 100% markers, pens, paper, and other things I use to make the comic. In lieu of a pledge drive, I’m going to leave that there and occasionally encourage you guys to pitch in and keep me in Sharpie markers. If that works: yay! If not: ah well. It seems to default to show items by most recently added, but I highly encourage you to switch to Priority: High to Low.

In other news: I was interviewed on the Sand and Steam blog. Check it out!

I mentioned a while back that the comic was about to get dark, and this along with what’s happening to Ophelia are the two things I was talking about. Fear not, this isn’t a permanent irreversable descent in to Grimdark territory. The comic will still feature jokes and random silliness and adventure and fun. It’s not going to be all death and trauma all the time. Now, in some ways things will never be the same again but I don’t intend to turn the comic in to Oldboy all of a sudden.

Wow. Just wow.
Thorton is not messing around.
Yeah.
That’s…that’s not good. Oh dear. I think Thorton….I don’t even know anymore. What happened to the happy grin? What happened to it?!
Also, the first thing that ran through my head was “Hey! Top hat guy is still alive! Yay!” (shakes head…)
I’m curious to see if people who go back and reread the comic have a different opinion of Thorton’s comments and actions leading up to this, because it’s all there from pretty early on.
Uh, I dunno, but this seems totally in-character for Thornton to me. As in, I’m not at all surprised that this page is here. Seems a pretty natural step for him (/maybe/ (and only maybe, at that) not the “pray…” part, but to me that’s more the ‘unusually-scary Thornton’ moment than anything else here; the rest seems to fit just fine.
(It’s not like *Toby*’s the one doing it!)
And just to reiterate what I’ve said above, the comic isn’t going pure Grimdark from here on out. There will still be humor and lightness and fun and adventure, but now this happened and there will be effects.
No worries. You’re in good company. All the great stories go from one extreme to the other. I think of “Firefly.”
Woah dude. That is freakin’ awesome. And I had a suspicion Thornton was gonna get dark, but it’s been so long that I forgot about it.
Glad you’re back, by the way.
Brings back memories. I did so enjoy that moment.
I knew this page would make you happy.
(For those unaware, Ken played Thorton in the original game.)
Well…WIN!
Occasional reminders of Sharpie need would be helpful.
Right now the Medium width pens are priority #1 if anyone is feeling generous.
Come on, this is nothing to lose your head over?
Sounds like something I (as in, one of my characters, of course) would do in a similar situation
When your outnumbered, out gunned, the healer’s down, and everyone has taken hits, THEN it’s time to bring out the diplomacy. Or in this case, intimidation.
Nah, I did it just to kill Lukov. I believe I initially had a Vengeance or Major Vow to kill Lukov
the bloody intimidation was just the side effect
And an excellent side effect it is!
….not that there’s anything wrong with a little Oldboy now and then.
Did Thorton get a raise on his Intimidation roll?
Signs point to yes.
FATALITY
The Ultimate Ultimatum… Does he actually realise Ophelia is dead/Bordering death? If not… He gonna be mega pissed off when he finds out..
Why, we might just find that out on the next page…
I’m assuming Thorton’s situational awareness shuttered down to “taking down Lukov and his gang”, so I expect he’s unaware until someone snaps him out of this “focus”.
My dearest Mr. Gaston,
I find myself enamored with your style and manner of drawing. You cannot imagine my joy at seeing the continuation of your work!
I am, Sir, your most humble and obedient servant,
Merle, Pirate, Thief and Safe-keeper of Shiny Things.
Why thank you!
Lots more face wrinkles recently. It fits the darker tone, though.
