0051: Seize

0051: Seize

EDIT: I tweaked this comic just a bit.  The background action in the original didn’t quite convey what was in my head.  The idea was that Agent Thorn took most of the troops inside, hence the way Private Stevens dissapears between panels 3 and 5.  But the comic never shows or tells you that.  And if the other troops are inside, Thorn’s last line doesn’t make much sense.  Hopefully the updated version is a bit easier to follow, if unfortunately wordier.  I also tweaked the artwork a bit: gave Thorton’s goggles some lenses,  toned down the background art a bit, changed the background shadows in panel 4, which were way too dynamic for the non action in that panel.   I think the comic was a bit too busy art wise, made it hard to focus on the characters.

For the record, the original image is here.  Chances are, aside from the dialogue the differences are only noticeable to me.

Ooof.  Another comic that took a long time to make.  It didn’t help that I stayed up late last night playing Dragon Age instead of drawing.  (As an aside, Dragon Age is really, really good.  I haven’t been this caught up in a RPG since Final Fantasy 7-8.)

Not much to add here, see you guys on Tuesday where we find out how our heroes react to this little bit of law enforcement.

    First!
And, I really need to buy that game. Maybe after vacation.

  2. pineappleleader says:

So…Who got arrested? I thought that Ophelia was certified or had a license or whatever so that Public Health and Safety would not bother her.

  3. Shawn says:

The red head kid got arrested. And Ophelia is every bit as illegal as every other mage in the Great Republic.

  4. Victor says:

    PS:

None of the goggles have lenses.

  5. Shawn says:

Noticed that. Haven’t decided yet if I want to go back and fix it.

  6. Kedamono says:

    “Help! Help! I’m being oppressed!”

Sadly, elementists are an oppressed minority in the Great Republic, so yeah, Ophi, keep your head down.

So, is there weather inside the levels of Clorencia City? I love the impression of sun shine in the background of the panels, along with the shafts of light from the street lamp above the door.

    Great stuff Shawn!

  7. Victor says:

Personally, I like the lens-less goggles. They look more authentic.

  8. Theron says:

Why do the goggles go “bzzz bzzz?”

  9. Shawn says:

    Hmm… that’s a good question!

  10. Kedamono says:

They go “bzzz bzzz” because they are ether goggles. They let you see ether as a smoky haze, and I imagine that they help with finding elementists and other magic users. I bet they stand out like knots of ether in the goggles.

  11. pineappleleader says:

Geez….I thought they were heavily tinted goggles.

I feel like Inspector Clouseau, “I miss nothing. Wah!!” Thud. “Who left this potted plant in the middle of the room?” Even though I seem to miss a lot of the fine points I still enjoy the Webcomic.

Keep up the good work. Also…I did my part. I voted. The rest of you do your part…Go vote.

The bzzt bzzt and stockstill stances of the other officers makes them seem even more like automatons.

  13. Jabor says:

    Dragon Age is awesome.

My comments on this comic page will wait until we see where it’s going.

  14. Avilan says:

I have not been this caught up in a game since Baldur’s Gate II.

…Now I can imagine all kinds of unpleasant things that happens to unlicensed mages, but since I am not that familiar with this setting… What is likely to happen? Jail? Lobotomizing? Burning at the stake?

  15. I really think this is a great episdoe Shawn. I love the layout and the feeling that the panels give. As Kedamono says, the lighting effect is awesome!

  16. Da Red Paintjob Grot says:

Yes, I too am intrigued, what level of persecution do the Magi face? Something akin to removal from public circulation, or full-on Warhammer40k level torture to death in the name of Purity? I personally prefer the idea of the first, seems more in keeping with the Background. Oppressive but not THAT screwed up.

  17. Nahual Slim says:

Is there any universe where gingers are not unfairly repressed?

  18. jygro says:

It took me a while to realize that the mother is someone new and not an occurring character cuz I was like. “Who the heck is the red head dude”… I’m not too fast on the uptake sometimes…

  19. >WBM says:

um, maybe a bit of spamming here, but I saw this and instantly thought of Clockworks… I can’t seem to find any forums, so I will just leave this here for the RPG/Clockworks fans.

paizo has material from the Etherscope setting for really, really, cheap…and I thought of Clockworks is all…

So I didn’t read the comic for 2 weeks so that I could read 4 in a row. It was fun that way, but it was really hard not to just read them as they came out.

Such a great story so far. I wish I could be part of this RPG. Is the kid a fey? Two more days till another update! :D

  21. taraswanwing says:

Does anyone else think that Officer Thorn looks like a park ranger? Cause it’s kinda weirding me out.
    “Only YOU can prevent unnaturals”
